“Le Tru di Artisc” ends directly in front of the “Ursus Ladinicus” Ladin museum in St. Kassian. In addition to exhibits on the geology of the Dolomites, it reveals facts about the Ladin cave bear, which once lived in the Conturines caves high up in the Dolomites. You can also visit these caves on a hike. A second Ladin museum is in St. Martin in Thurn, within the venerable walls of the “Ciastel de Tor”, an 800-year-old castle. Here, a collection of artefacts lays bare the thousand-year-old history of the Ladin community, illuminating their customs and the enduring legacy of their language.

Discover art and culture on foot

Any season, whether summer or autumn, winter or spring, is a perfect time for a journey through the countryside on the “Tru dles Viles” farm hike. Witness traditional Ladin architecture as you hike from one small village to the next. The Rhaetian Tambra settlements are considered the oldest forms of Alpine mountain living. Many farmsteads along the slopes of Val Badia, with their wooden constructions and distinctive mushroom-shaped roofs, are inspired by these. Even on a leisurely hike, you will encounter a wealth of Ladin culture, which includes agricultural activities and the care of mountain meadows, such as cutting the grass and storing the hay on the mountain pastures. The nature parks are also home to culture: the Fanes-Sennes-Prags nature park is, after all, where the most famous Fanes legend originated.

Bruneck and the South Tyrolean Pustertal Valley

At the end of Val Badia lies Kronplatz. It is also part of the legends of the Dolomites, as Princess Dolasilla was crowned on it. Today, there are two museums at the top of Kronplatz: the Lumen Museum, dedicated to mountain photography, and in a nearby building designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, one of the six Messner Mountain Museums, the MMM Corones. These cultural treasures are accessible even in winter, offering a unique opportunity to merge a visit with an adventure in the Kronplatz ski resort. Below, in Bruneck, the second Messner Mountain Museum, MMM Ripa, is situated within the castle and delves into the lives of mountain communities across the globe. Additionally, the town is home to a doll museum and a folklore museum. Bruneck is only an hour’s drive from refugium LaFlu.
